Thermal targets

Heat the profile, not the chemistry.

Surface sterilisation aims to eliminate pathogens, pests, diseases, spores and other harmful microorganisms without chemicals, and without harming soil composition. Fineturf worked with global specialists on a highly manoeuvrable unit. Pipes transfer steam under heatproof covers. The objective is 85°C in the top 65mm of the profile for a full hour, and 60°C below that.

As AELTC adapts to climate and environmental pressure, steam sterilisation is now a major part of the programme to manage weeds, pests and disease. It is a rolling programme so courts can stay open longer for members.

The same process works on cricket and football surfaces. At Lord’s, Fineturf sterilised four key wickets on the square.

Process

How we deliver the work.

  1. Position the sterilisation unit

The manoeuvrable unit is situated beside the surface being treated.

  2. Transfer and retain steam

Pipes transfer steam retained with heatproof covers.

  3. Achieve thermal targets

85°C in the top 65mm for one hour, and 60°C below that.

  4. Support ongoing programmes

Rolling programmes help venues manage weeds, pests and diseases while keeping surfaces open longer.
