Construction profile

From formation to playing surface.

Experience spans clubs across the UK, including Barnes Bowls Club and Croquet World Cup hosts The Roehampton Club. Construction follows Sport England bowling green guidelines, using an in-house team and owned plant. Slabs can be laid around the green to frame the playing area.

  • Excavate, consolidate and level the formation
  • Drainage and irrigation, then a gravel carpet and blinding grit (barrier to the rootzone)
  • County concrete channels to Bowls England guidelines
  • Optional astroturf to channels and rubber ditch mats
  • Bowling green turf or specialist seed, then contract grow-in

Renovation repairs the surface, reinstates levels and improves play. Typical work includes surface removal, cultivation, sports sand or rootzone and re-seeding; deep or hollow tine aeration to relieve compaction, remove thatch and encourage new root growth; and products to control weeds and turfgrass disease where required.

Croquet needs a surface close to a bowling green: level, firm, well-drained and closely mown. We construct new lawns and renovate existing grass into high-quality croquet lawns, with the approach matched to budget, intensity of use and the maintenance regime that will follow.

Bowling green construction and installation costs vary. Contact Fineturf for advice, especially if you are applying for Sport England funding.
